This small scale research project was commissioned by the British Council as part of their Going Global Partnership programme that seeks to harness best practice across different geographies. This particular research surveys the future skills needed for the EV sector and the extent to which public TVET colleges in South Africa are preparing to meet the demand for these skills.
A part of the research will be presented at the Sub-Saharan Regional seminar jointly hosted by the British Council and Nuffic titled: “Green skills and retrofitting the economy: the pathways to sustainability”.
The following questions will be used to generate discussion around possible solutions to the challenges of migrating from ICE vehicles to New Energy Vehicles(NEVs)
- Why is necessary to transition from ICE(Internal Combustion Engines) to Electric and Hybrid vehicles?
- How do we transition responsibly? That is, not cannabilising the existing vehicles while at the same time not leaving anybody behind?
- What are some of the key action steps necessary for providers of education and training such as institutions of higher and further learning to engage in?
- What role must government and the auto industry play in order to ensure a successful but responsible transition to electric vehicles?
